Overview

This packet isolates Thomas Savile / Savell as a source-network figure. He matters for two different reasons that should not be collapsed:

• The ONB Blotius letters show a Thomas Savile using the Vienna Imperial Library network from Padua in 1589-1590 for copied texts, courier routes, and manuscript comparison.
• British Library Harley MS 6995 adds a high-value second source-network control: Tycho Brahe wrote to Sir Thomas Savile from Uraniborg on 1 Dec. 1590, and Hugo Blotius wrote to Sir Thomas Savile from Venice on 27 Dec. 1590.
• The National Archives catalogue for PRO 30/50/70/2 records sixteen Italian newsletters addressed to Thomas Savell of London in 1591, and the project treats the newsletter packet as Neville-archive material under the manuscript/provenance evidence.

The current best formulation is that Thomas Savile/Savell is a major source-acquisition and Italian-intelligence node within the Neville/Savile network. The newsletter route now has a consolidated source note for the catalogue, manuscript images, transcriptions, hand evidence, Savile cousin evidence, and archival-label conflict.

• The archival-label conflict remains open and visible. The current newsletter dossier control is PRO 30/50/70/2; older book prose also cites SP 12/238, f. 180 for the Boccaccio scribble. Do not silently merge those labels before shelfmark reconciliation.

Tycho Portrait / Hamlet Source-Map Notes

• The Tycho-to-Savile letter is stronger than a generic scientific-network control. In the printed Dreyer/Tekstnet text, Tycho's postscript says he added four copies of his recently Amsterdam-engraved likeness and wanted English poets to write an epigram on the image and his works.
• This matters for the Rosencrantz/Guildenstern lead because the best currently identified candidate portrait, SMK Open KKSgb7575, is dated 1588-1590 and visibly carries heraldic labels corresponding to Rosenkrans and Gyldensteren.
• Book-safe formulation: Thomas Savile is a confirmed recipient of Tycho portrait proofs in 1590, in a letter naming Rogers, Dee, and Digges and explicitly asking for English poetic response. That is a concrete route for the portrait into an English learned/poetic network. It is not direct proof that Shakespeare saw the engraving.

• The 30 Jul. 1589 address side reads Thomas SAVELLUS Anglus Patavio 30 July 1589. The letter mentions Zundelin and asks Blotius to transmit Savile's materials through reliable merchants.

• The 20 May 1590 letter asks Blotius to have an Italian libellus by Aconcio, de ratione muniendi urbes, copied from the Imperial Library and sent to Padua through Henry Parvis of Nuremberg, who will pay the copying costs. It also asks about a Pletho fragment among Sambucus's books.

• The 11 Jul. 1590 letter refers to Geographia Ptolemaei, comparison with manuscript books, and material expected at Pinelli's. This makes the Thomas Savile/Blotius lane a concrete source-copying and manuscript-comparison channel.

It reads repeated Alibech, Rustico, Rusticuccio, killigrew, and Sr Harry forms above an Italian newsletter fragment. The 2026-06-21 source note now presents the image/hand/provenance chain cleanly, while preserving the warning that the SP 12/238, f. 180 label in some book prose must be reconciled with the PRO 30/50/70/2 newsletter dossier.

• Source-control position: the reverse-side image has now been staged in a local source-image packet, and a separate provenance source note assembles the newsletter dossier, local transcription layer, Savile cousin controls, and Killigrew/Alibech witness into one citation chain. The route should no longer be presented as an unresolved addressee puzzle.

• In the Savile/Tacitus/Pinelli lane, Philo argues that the Ambrosiana translations of Savile's 1591 Tacitus commentary are better attributed to Henry Cuffe than to Thomas Savile because the translations depend on the printed 1591 edition after Thomas had left Italy. The ONB Thomas Savile letters are therefore useful context for Savile-family source work in Italy, but they do not replace Philo's Cuffe attribution.
