The 1780 Billingbear catalogue lists Francesco Sansovino's Historia universale dell'origine, et imperio de' Turchi, Venice, 1582. Direct images of that edition show concealed Ottoman deliberations reconstructed from Constantinople avvisi, a force of 80 galleys plus 30 galliots, a separate 100-galley detachment, movement between Cyprus and Rhodes to obtain intelligence, and return to Cyprus with a detailed report.

Richard Knolles's 1603 Generall Historie of the Turkes, already recognized in Othello scholarship, gives an even closer English sequence: 80 galleys and 30 galliots, a rendezvous at Rhodes, a combined force of 200, and onward movement to Cyprus. Ralph Carr's 1600 Mahumetane or Turkish historie supplies an earlier English Rhodes-to-Cyprus report and says its material was translated from French and Italian.
