The main text can be collated against Gardiner's public edition of the earlier Jacobean witness and supports several useful variants, including repaired rather than the former XML repaid. Why this witness matters

The National Archives SP 16/441 f.262, Gale MC4325281192, is a complete later copy of An Advice Touching the Holding of a Parliament, the work represented in the Neville Letters XML as document_neville_advice. The catalogue dates the copy to 12 January 1640 and identifies extensive marginal annotations as Archbishop William Laud's handwriting.

The manuscript is important even though the text was already known. It shows the Advice surviving and receiving close analytical attention at another moment of acute Crown-Parliament tension. The annotations divide the argument into practical categories: the choice between Parliament and projects, reasons for summoning Parliament, objections, expected demands, preparatory measures, management of the Commons, and the predicted outcome.

The 1640 date belongs to this witness, not to the original composition. The work belongs to the pre-1614 parliamentary setting. The Gale title retains a question mark around Neville's attribution, which must remain visible.

Principal textual result

The main hand is substantively the same text printed by Gardiner from SP 14/74/44 and encoded in the XML. It preserves the Antigonus/Demetrius example, confidence and concord, the proposal for a Commons-nominated group of 30 or 40 or fewer, the Tacitean tag seu bene seu male facta premunt, and the full final personal justification.

The new witness also improves the text:

• it supports great wants and the world takes notice, agreeing with the XML where Gardiner differs;
• it has they will either fayle or fall short, a minor word-order variant;
• it reads there and nowhere else it must be repaired, agreeing with Gardiner and correcting the XML's former repaid.

Both v12 XML variants were corrected from repaid to repaired on 31 July 2026 after direct image inspection and Gardiner control.

Provisional transcription status

A fresh, image-based transcription and collation has been attempted in the dated pass. The main hand is comparatively secure because it can be controlled continuously against Gardiner. The marginal annotations are smaller, compressed, and often abbreviated; they remain an unverified AI working reading. No marginal wording should be quoted as Laud's exact language until checked by an expert.
