Its value for future research is not that every person belonged to one intimate circle, but that marriage, stepfamily, diplomatic service, manuscript acquisition, book patronage, and testamentary duty created a series of documented bridges.

Bodley Will And Library Inheritance

The complete local Robyn Adams chapter was re-searched in this pass. It directly controls that Bodley named Sir Ralph Winwood and Sir Henry Savile as overseers; that Winwood was married to Bodley's stepdaughter Elizabeth; and that the will's institutional priority for the library created family and financial grievance. Adams also distinguishes evidence: Chamberlain and Winwood's agent John More report discontent, while there is no evidence that Winwood formally contested the testamentary instructions.

This matters beyond genealogy. It gives a future research base for early modern libraries as family-financed institutions. Bodley's project drew on marriage-derived wealth, donations, political friendships, stationers, diplomats, scholars, and legal overseers. • DNB/Wikisource identifies Dudley Carleton as son of Anthony Carleton of Baldwin Brightwell, Oxfordshire, by Jocosa Goodwin.
• The same DNB entry originally says Dudley married Anne, daughter of Sir Henry Savile. Its erratum correctly makes Anne the daughter of George Gerrard of Dorney and Margaret, but calls Savile Margaret's second husband. The fuller Hurst monument sequence gives three marriages: George Garrard, John Smith of Essex, and Sir Henry Savile. Savile was therefore Margaret's third husband.
• Therefore the correct wording is: Dudley Carleton married Henry Savile's stepdaughter, Anne Gerrard/Garrard.

• The exact Dudley/George-bishop cousin path remains unresolved after another pass. The source state is now sharper, not simpler: Chamberlain/McClure, Cooper, and a JSTOR Sarpi snippet support kinship language, but the bridge between the Brightwell Baldwin/Oxfordshire and Carleton Hall/Cumberland lines remains unproved.
• Memorials of the Carletons is still the governing caution: it distinguishes two seventeenth-century Carleton families and says deriving the Oxfordshire line from the Cumberland line is difficult to say.
• Stable page images now control the main caution: Memorials of the Carletons PDF p. 21 gives the two-family warning, PDF p. 25 says the Oxfordshire family came from Sutton, Lincolnshire, settled at Brightwell, and included Sir Dudley, and PDF p. 97 identifies George, eldest son of Anthony, as of Huntercombe.

• The Dudley/George cousin relationship is currently a lead: later scholarship calls George Carleton Dudley's cousin, but the exact route is not yet extracted. The Brightwell/Dudley pedigree and the Carleton Hall/Guy/George pedigree must be reconciled before the relationship is stated precisely.
• The Savile/Carleton relationship is stronger: the DNB erratum and Gajda both support Dudley as Savile's step-son-in-law through Dudley's marriage to Savile's stepdaughter Anne Garrard/Gerrard.
• The Savile/Dudley book-work corridor is now stronger than marriage alone: a local 1603 State Papers image with partial body anchors, 1608 Eton/Greek-letter calendar entry, 1609 Chrysostom work entry, and 1610 book/MSS instructions all point to a practical scholarly household and court-document network.
• The Winwood/Bodley relationship is also strong at the DNB level: Winwood married Bodley's stepdaughter Elizabeth Ball.
• The Bodley/Winwood will controversy is now controlled at two levels: printed primary witness in Winwood's Memorials and modern synthesis in Adams. Direct extraction of Bodley's will and HMC Buccleuch remains necessary before using stronger estate-law wording.
• This packet should prevent three common errors:
• calling Anne Gerrard/Garrard Savile's daughter rather than stepdaughter;
• treating George Carleton's Carleton-family links as automatically proved from Dudley's Brightwell pedigree;

• Doc_20b should be cited as a direct Dudley Carleton-to-Neville letter only. The later docket's S^r Dudley Carleton is an endorsement because Carleton was knighted after the 1608/9 letter. 2026-07-15 Affinity and Identity Audit

The Savile-Carleton chain has been rewritten as separate marriage and parentage edges. The controlling Hurst monument sequence says Margaret Dacre married (1) George Garrard, (2) John Smith of Essex, and (3) Sir Henry Savile. Anne Garrard was Margaret's daughter by her first husband. Anne later married Dudley Carleton. Consequently:

• Anne was Henry Savile's stepdaughter;
• Dudley was Savile's step-son-in-law;
• Savile was Margaret's third husband, despite the DNB erratum's abbreviated second husband wording;
• the calendared father Savile phrase records household kinship and cannot be converted into biological descent.

This relationship had demonstrable scholarly consequences.
