Direct 1601 Page-Image Witness Located, 2026-07-13

The principal open question in this bridge packet is now closed. A page-image witness of Charles Fitz-Geffrey's 1601 Oxford edition has been located in the Internet Archive's Early English Books scans and directly inspected. Book III, epigram 41 is on printed p. 129 (PDF p. 131): affaniae_III_41_pdfpage131.jpg.

The heading and decisive lines read:

The print therefore securely supplies all of the elements that previously depended on a modern web transcription: Richard Carew returning from France; Orléans (Aureliae urbis); Neville; Trelawny; and access to the court of the great king. The capitalized names NEVILLI and TRELAWNIVM are unambiguous on the page. The exact force of Aonii and the best literary translation remain interpretive questions; the print proves the Latin wording, not one uniquely correct English rendering.

The bibliographical control is now also stronger. The Folger catalogue identifies the book as Charles Fitz-Geffrey, Caroli Fitzgeofridi affaniae: sive epigrammatum libri tres ... ejusdem cenotaphia, Oxford, Joseph Barnes, 1601, STC 10934, with Cenotaphia under a separate title page. The evidentiary significance should be stated carefully. The epigram is contemporary printed testimony that a learned Neville was remembered in connection with Carew, Trelawny, Orléans, and the French court. Identifying this Nevillus as Henry Neville is a prosopographical conclusion supported by the known continental company and Carew connection, not something the page spells out with a forename. The direct print nevertheless moves the core quotation from a web-edition lead to a page-controlled primary printed witness.
