Neville's Dieppe Advance Party, Steward, Crossing, Reception, and Horse Passport, 1599

Mixed Needs Review evidence packet

Neville's entry into France through Dieppe

Sourced Facts

Winwood's printed dispatch sequence shows that Neville's embassy entered France in stages. Writing from Dover on 26–27 April 1599, Neville says his steward was already at Dieppe. The ambassador then remained weather-bound, crossed after a voyage approaching three days, and wrote from Dieppe on 3 May.

At arrival, neither the governor nor lieutenant-governor was present. Neville says other town officers received him. A related request concerned an English passport for five or six geldings intended for the governor. These facts show advance household preparation, port reception, and reciprocal movement of horses and documents.

Quoted Source Text

From Dover on 26 April, Neville writes:

“I received at my coming to Dover, a letter from my steward, who is attending me at Dieppe, dated two days since.”

This controls the advance party but does not name the steward.

Officeholder control

The governor was Aymar de Clermont de Chaste, governor of Dieppe and Arques. A French naval-archive catalogue also records de Chaste's expenses for a 1596 journey to England with the duc de Bouillon and for receiving an English ambassador at Dieppe. This provides a documented prehistory to the Channel network, but does not identify the absent lieutenant or Neville's steward.

What is still missing

The dispatches do not yet name the steward, the ship, the lodging, or every receiving officer. The exact crossing chronology should be collated against Dover port records, post accounts, endorsements, and French municipal registers. The gelding request records an application, not proof that the animals passed.
